Key facts for Republic of Ireland buyers, as of October 2026
— Any vehicle subject to European Union type-approval must be registered in Ireland, and a Certificate of Conformity indicates type-approval.
— Tractor categories T1 to T5 are in Vehicle Registration Tax Category C at €200.
— The NCTS appointment is required within seven days of entry and registration within 30 days.
— Do not treat a Certificate of Conformity as a replacement for a used tractor's foreign registration document.
— An unclear tractor category or approval position is not settled.
— A Great Britain tractor needs its customs reference linked to registration; its separate type-approval and engine position are not settled.
Sources are listed at the end of this guide. Before you commit, confirm the registration category and documents with Revenue or NCTS, the approval route with NSAI, the engine position with the manufacturer or relevant authority, and the customs position with your clearing agent.
Does an imported tractor have to be registered in Ireland?
Settle the tractor's category before you pay a deposit. As of October 2026, Revenue says any vehicle subject to European Union (EU) type-approval must be registered. A Certificate of Conformity (CoC) indicates that a machine is subject to type-approval.
Regulation (EU) No 167/2013 says importers should place tractors on the market only when they have EU type-approval or national approval. The treatment of a used tractor with UK-only approval after Brexit is not settled for the individual machine. Ask Revenue, the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) and the buyer's clearing agent for the written route. Read the Republic of Ireland machinery-import guide for the customs, VAT and plant-health steps around the tractor.
What VRT applies to an imported tractor?
The statutory amount follows the category, not the word “tractor” in an advert. As of October 2026, Revenue's VRT Manual Section 1A places tractor categories T1 to T5 in Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) Category C at €200.
If the EU category cannot be confirmed, Revenue's manual says the vehicle is treated as Category M1. An unclear-category tractor therefore needs a written Revenue VRT Service decision. Do not budget on Category C until the category evidence is accepted.
How quickly must an imported tractor be registered?
Plan the registration before the tractor moves. These are the October 2026 deadlines. Revenue requires an NCTS registration appointment within seven days of bringing a registrable vehicle into the State and registration within 30 days.
Late registration can lead to additional VRT, and an unregistered vehicle can be detained. Do not assume missing documents extend either deadline. Record the entry date and ask the NCTS registration service to confirm the appointment arrangements for the tractor.
What documents does NCTS require for an imported tractor?
Ask for originals while the seller still has an incentive to help. As of October 2026, Revenue's published list includes the invoice, photo identification, PPSN or tax number, the appropriate vehicle-purchase-details form, evidence of the date of entry and the foreign registration or de-registration document for a used vehicle. The presentation is car-focused, so NCTS should confirm the tractor-specific originals, copies, form and appointment centre.
Keep the foreign registration document and CoC as separate requirements. Revenue's electronic or hard-copy CoC instruction sits under new vehicles; it does not establish that a CoC replaces the foreign registration document for a used tractor.
For a tractor imported from outside the EU, Revenue's registration guidance requires the customs declaration Movement Reference Number (MRN). The buyer's clearing agent should complete the customs step and supply the reference linked to the tractor before the appointment. If the tractor is in Northern Ireland, its entry history may matter as much as its current location; use our Northern Ireland-to-Republic guide.
A pre-purchase inspection can match the chassis and serial details to the available documents before commitment. The same document-first discipline matters when buying a used tractor sight-unseen.
What if the tractor has no logbook or no Certificate of Conformity?
Stop and get written answers before buying. As of October 2026, it is not settled whether a used tractor with no foreign registration document, no EU CoC or both can be registered within the deadline. Do not assume that a workaround exists. Revenue VRT Service or NCTS must confirm the registration route for the actual tractor.
NSAI's published Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) route covers vehicle categories M, N and O, not tractor category T. It is not a confirmed workaround for missing tractor approval papers. Ask NSAI whether another national-approval route exists. Do not assume the seven-day or 30-day deadlines pause while you look for one.
What if the tractor’s type approval or engine position is unclear?
Registration is one part of the decision.
The treatment of the tractor itself and mounted machinery such as a front loader under the Machinery Directive is not confirmed. Do not assume one answer covers both. Ask the relevant Irish market-surveillance authority and the manufacturer for written guidance on the actual combination.
The engine needs its own check. Regulation (EU) 2016/1628 requires Member States to permit only compliant type-approved engines, and machines carrying them, onto the EU market. Articles 1–34 do not establish a general used-machine exemption. The manufacturer, relevant authority and buyer's clearing agent should confirm the required engine stage, approval and transition treatment for the tractor.
Imported-tractor registration checklist
For the October 2026 position, complete these checks before purchase and arrival:
— Identify and document the tractor's EU category before relying on Category C treatment.
— Record the entry date and plan the NCTS appointment within seven days and registration within 30 days.
— Ask the seller for the original foreign registration or de-registration document and list the CoC separately.
— If either document is missing, obtain written Revenue VRT Service or NCTS and NSAI answers before buying.
— Confirm the full tractor-specific NCTS document set, form and appointment centre.
— For a Great Britain purchase, have the buyer's clearing agent complete customs and supply the correct MRN linked to the tractor.
— Confirm any UK-only approval, mounted-equipment and engine issue with the relevant authority before purchase.
Working with a buying agent who already does this
Euro Plant Finder finds and inspects tractors, checks the seller and compares the machine's identity with the available export-side documents. We coordinate the handover with the buyer's own clearing agent and Irish advisers.
The buyer's clearing agent handles any customs declaration. Revenue and NCTS control registration, while NSAI or another relevant authority decides any approval route. We do not register or clear the tractor.

How do I register an imported tractor in Ireland?
As of October 2026, first establish the tractor's EU category and collect its original documents. Revenue places categories T1 to T5 in VRT Category C at €200. Arrange the NCTS registration appointment within seven days of entry and complete registration within 30 days. For a non-EU import, have the buyer's clearing agent supply the customs Movement Reference Number. Ask NCTS to confirm the tractor-specific originals, form and appointment centre before the tractor arrives.
How much is VRT on an imported agricultural tractor?
As of October 2026, Revenue's VRT Manual Section 1A places tractor categories T1 to T5 in Category C with Vehicle Registration Tax of €200. Do not assume that amount applies if the tractor's EU category cannot be proved. Revenue's manual says a vehicle whose EU category cannot be confirmed is treated as Category M1. Ask the Revenue VRT Service for a written category decision on the actual tractor before buying it.
What documents does NCTS need for an imported tractor?
As of October 2026, Revenue's published registration list includes the invoice, photo identification, PPSN or tax number, the appropriate vehicle-purchase-details form, evidence of entry date and the foreign registration document for a used vehicle. Its presentation is car-focused, so ask NCTS for the complete tractor set. A Certificate of Conformity does not replace the foreign registration document on the published wording. A non-EU import also needs the customs Movement Reference Number linked to the tractor.
Can I register a tractor without a logbook or Certificate of Conformity?
As of October 2026, the route is not settled for a used tractor with no foreign registration document, no EU Certificate of Conformity or both. Do not assume that a replacement or retrospective route exists, and do not expect missing papers to extend the statutory deadlines. Before buying, send the exact document position to Revenue VRT Service or NCTS and ask for a written registration answer. Ask NSAI separately whether any approval route applies to the tractor.
Does Individual Vehicle Approval cover an agricultural tractor?
As of October 2026, the National Standards Authority of Ireland's published Individual Vehicle Approval route covers categories M, N and O, not tractor category T. It is therefore not a confirmed workaround for missing tractor approval papers. Ask NSAI whether another national-approval route exists for the actual tractor. Revenue must still decide the registration category and documents; do not treat an approval discussion as permission to miss the seven-day appointment or 30-day registration deadline.
Can Euro Plant Finder handle VRT registration and Irish customs?
Euro Plant Finder works on the sourcing and export side. We check the seller, inspect the tractor, compare its serial and chassis details with the available documents, and coordinate the handover to the buyer's advisers. The buyer's own clearing agent completes any customs declaration and supplies the customs reference. Revenue and NCTS control registration, while NSAI or another relevant authority decides any approval question. We do not register or clear the tractor.
